Thought I would lump all the results together in one update this weekend….

Switzerland 1-1 Poland

i

Not much of a game – good goal from Shaquiri.

Wales 1-0 Northern Ireland

d

Not much of a game… Wales worst performance in the tournament apart from England. Northern Ireland shut down Bale for much of the game, but you can’t keep a good man down and his cross gave no option but an own goal. The dream continues…

Croatia 0-1 Portugal

f

A real shocker in terms of chances on target. On the radio they said that by the 101st minute there hadn’t been a shot on target. Croatia were the better team but couldn’t hit a barn door and then Portugal, who seemed to be settling for penalties, crept into steal the result. Four games – no wins in 90 minutes and in the last 8. They could win the tournament without winning a game!

France 2-1 R. of Ireland

a

An dream start from Ireland meant that the hosts were under pressure for the first half, but then the game ebbed away with the Duffy red. Two goals from Griezmann saw France through – Iceland will sort them out!

Germany 3-0 Slovakia

b

Business as usual from Germany – making light work of Slovakia. Could have been more – showed how shit England are.

Hungary 0-4 Belgium

Belgium finally delivered what they have promised for about six years and justified their FIFA ranking for the first time. Whether this is a turnaround from Belgium is debatable – Hungary are not exactly Chile. Still think Wales can’t take them down – they have the measure of them – as long as big Ash is fit.

Italy 2-0 Spain

Italy started the game at 10/3 and made a mockery of the odds. Italy are beautifully balanced and took Spain to the cleaners. If it weren’t for De Gea, it would have been 5-0 at half-time. Buffon made some fab saves, but the result never looked in doubt. Put your money on ’em – they’ve never lost to Germany in tournament football.

England 1-2  Iceland

Where do we begin. It reminded me very slightly of the Euro 96 semi-final – a very early goal and then it all goes tits up. Utter bollocks from England – clueless, shapeless bunch of fuckwits. Players picked on reputation, not form. On that basis I was surprised that Lineker and Shearer weren’t hauled out of the TV studio! At least the hope is gone sooner rather than later – can get on with enjoying the football without biting nails and screaming like a mad bastard.

Results and Leaderboard

Pete Reynolds sits atop the table. Leading going into the last game of the 16 he (as well as Gemma Keane and Richard McCrae) went for Iceland in a massive shout. Actually – Gemma got the result spot on – top job! As a result Pete sits in first and wins the yellow cap thanks to getting 7 out of 8 in the last 16 – fantastic.
