The last sixteen has seen some cracking games and a few more welcome surprises!
France v Argentina
Following their performances to date, I predicted a bit of a stalemate, but how wrong can you be! This was a splendid end to end goalfest. France have finally come alive, and Argentina finally got their act together, but France always had their noses in front and are now looking sharp. No-one predicted the 4-3, but Deb/Lee and Tom Finnerty predicted 3-2 and got some close points.

Uruguay v Portugal
A close game from the teams who constantly punch beyond their weight in South America and Europe. In the end class from Cavani saw off Ronaldo and co. The two legends leave the stage on the same day – shame. We had twelve spot on picks in our pool grabbing all three points.

Spain v Russia
What a pleasure to witness. Spain don’t seem to have a plan B and continue to smash their heads into the brick wall of futility. Glad to see the end of Iniesta – one less player for the commentators and media to lactate over. Russia just held their nerve and smashed it in the penalty shoot out. Nobody even considered the draw with nearly everybody going for a Spain win or a few optimistic souls for the Russia win.

Croatia v Denmark
Whilst I watched this game, I can’t remember much about it apart from the good old penalty shoot out. With Schmeichal saving a penalty from Modric in extra time, you felt Croatia had their chance, but in the end, great goalkeeping from both sides meant that Croatia saw the Danes off – but far from convincing. Lee/Deb and Dave Sweet predicted the 1-1 stalemate.

Brazil v Mexico
Listened to this whilst on Watergate Bay in Cornwall, on trusty old Five Live. DAB radio being about the only signal you can get down here. Mexico pushed Brazil hard but in the end didn’t have enough class and Neymar continues to roll on. We had seven people in our pool get this spot on.

Belgium v Japan
Watched the first half and went out for a meal for the second. Rookie error!! Heard that Japan had gone two up and thought game on, but somehow the Belgians edged out Japan 3-2. Must have been the genius of bringing on Fellani that did it. Gutted for Japan, even though they didn’t really deserve to even get this far. We had five get this one close, but no-one went for 3-2.

Sweden v Switzerland
Bit of a shit game, but as it is a World Cup last sixteen match it is always on a knife edge. Sweden scored through a terrible shot and unfortunate deflection and Switzerland couldn’t do enough to get back on level terms. We had three people predict the 1-0; Bill Gkatzionis, Craig McLaren and David Bailey.

Colombia v England
History has been made with England finally winning a penalty shoot out at the World Cup! England started the game knocking the ball round the back like they were a couple of goals up. When they then take the lead they lost all control of the match and the inevitable happened with what was probably one of only a couple of attempts on goal. They didn’t even seem to get into it in extra time but managed to win the shoot out! Quite why Sterling is even picked is still beyond me – offered zero. Sweden next – at least we won’t get any of the bollocks we saw tonight in that game. Three seasoned veterans of England knock-out football picked the 1-1; Duncan Reid, Pete Lee and Rob Doody! Well done chaps!

After the last sixteen we have to yellow caps to present after Duncan Reid and Lee/Deb both top scored.
