It’s a funny old game – you spend Uruguay v Ghana, urging on Ghana – disgusted at the injustice of Suarez’s handball on the line, and then 5 days later you are urging on Uruguay against the Dutch. The Dutch can play good football, but I cannot understand why they dive all of the time. Robben and Sneijder two of the biggest protaganists. On the other hand, you have got Van Bommel who should have been sent off three times tonight. How he gets away with those challenges is beyond me. The first goal came from a shocking challenge from Van Bommel, that the Uruguayan did not make a meal of and the Dutch within seconds are one-nil up.

Can’t see how the second goal stood – Van Persie must have been active, his action would have put off the keeper. In the end, bad luck to Uruguay – they played fantastically for a team who were 5/1 for the game, come from a country of just under 3½ million people, and are the sixth smallest country to have ever qualified for the final, let alone won it twice and got to three semi-finals. Astonishing.

Anyway, onto the competition. We now have a three-way tie at the top between Mike Harris, Kate Marks and Gareth Lewis. However, all three will be looking over the shoulder to people who have got the likes of Spain and Netherlands in the selection. Only two five pointers this evening, so a big well done to number one son Sam Drew and me old mate Nick Claydon. This lifts Nick to the dizzy heights of 56th! In the second phase race, Lee Malpas takes a two point lead on 43 points from Kate Marks.

Now here’s something I thought I wouldn’t say – come on Germany!!!!
